Vinton Garden Club May 25, 2016
The Vinton Garden Club member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., District II and Central Region met at 9:30 am, May 25th at the secretaries office at fairgrounds, due to rain the painting at the 218 park was canceled.
President Fran Stueck called the meeting to order at 10:30. Seven member recited the Pledge of Allegiance and Conservation Pledge.

FREE TOOTSIE'S DELICIOUS SOFT SERVE...The Vinton Red Cross Community Blood Drive is partnering with Vinton's Tootsie's to have a blood drive on Thursday, June 16, from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Vinton's Skate and Activities Center, 1703 C Ave. All donors will receive a coupon good for one pint of Tootsie's soft serve. Appointments may be made on line at redcrossblood.
Chapter Officer Leadership Training
On May 7th, 2016, the 2016-2017 Vinton-Shellsburg FFA officer team was installed. All of the offices are highly important to the chapter and it’s members and each officer is required to attend COLT, Chapter Officer Leadership Training, in order to be sure that they all know what is expected of them as an officer.
This year the training was held on June 8th at Hawkeye Community College.
2016 Party in the Park Parade Saturday, June 25
The 2016 Party in the Park Parade will begin at 5:30 PM on Saturday, June 25th. The route will begin at the Benton County Fairgrounds, located on south 2nd Avenue. The route will come north on 2nd Avenue and then west of 6th Street. Next, it will go west on 6th Street to B Avenue, north on B Avenue to 4th Street and then east of 4th Street to where it will begin dispersing after the 2nd Avenue intersection.

Despite the Internet, cell phones, email and modern communications, every year whole regions find themselves in the dark.
Tornadoes, fires, storms, ice and even the occasional cutting of fiber optic cables leave people without the means to communicate.
In these cases, the one consistent service that has never failed has been Amateur Radio.
Pasture walk to focus on timber pasture improvement
Managing timbered pastures is a challenge to balance between forage production and lumber production.
A pasture walk will be held at the Paul Mohlis farm near Fayette on Tuesday, July 12, starting at 6 pm. Utilizing EQIP and CSP contracts, Mohlis and his tenant Craig Allen of Allen’s’ Hilltop Angus have subdivided the 100+ acre pasture into about 10 acre paddocks, improved the stand by frost seeding legumes, and installed a spring water development with gravity flow distribution to paddocks.
Benton Co. Relay For Life starts at 6 p.m. tonight in Van Horne
The Benton County Relay For Life of Benton County will be Friday, June 10, at the Benton Community School Track, west entrance, Van Horne. The goal this year is $35,000. Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend this fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Parking will be available south of the track, weather permitting. There will be seating in the bleachers or bring a lawn chair.
Summer Reading Program under way at Vinton Library
The Summer Reading Program began Thursday at the Vinton Public Library. There will be daily activities at 10:30 a.m. Mon-Thursday from June 9th until the end of July.
We had a good response to our Legos and have added a lot more to our collection including the Technic legos and are continuing with that as well as having a fun game day with a variety of board games, checkers and others.
Open House/Reception for Rev. Dr. Judith Bunyi Sunday, June 12
Wesley United Methodist Church would like to invite you to an Open House/Reception honoring the retirement of Rev. Dr. Judith Bunyi on Sunday, June 12.
The event will be held in the fireplace room at the church, 516 2nd Ave., Vinton, from 1:30 to 3:30 pm.
